ROBERT LENKIEWICZ – THE LEAVES WERE FULL OF CHILDREN
DVD RELEASE
SWFTA. ARTISTS OF THE SOUTH WEST.
The Lenkiewicz Foundation is pleased to announce their first official DVD release. In partnership with South West Film and Television Archive, the Foundation has compiled the definitive collection of TSW footage of the celebrated artist between the years 1973 and 1982.
TLF spokesperon Anna Navas explains, ‘following keen interest in a DVD after our exhibition at The Royal William Yard last year we’re excited to showcase Robert’s unique charisma and wit. The release coincides with our first major overseas exhibition in Germany opening June 23rd’.
The DVD features the 1982 documentary THE LEAVES WERE FULL OF CHILDREN, considered the best produced during the artist’s lifetime. Lenkiewicz talks about his unusual approach to painting and gives an extended guide to the magnificent ‘Riddle Mural’ in the Round Room at the Port Eliot estate in St Germans, Cornwall. Other vignettes range from intimate conversations with Lenkiewicz about the romantic myths surrounding the work of the painter, to the crowded opening night of the Vagrancy exhibition.
Those familiar with Lenkiewicz will recognize some iconic characters on the screen. Notably the painter’s muse and third wife Mary, subject of his 1981 Project, The Painter with Mary: a Study in Obsessional Behaviour. Mary inspired the artist’s first relationship notebook, now published. From one kind of obsession to another, audiences will be introduced to the vagrant Edwin Mackenzie, known as ‘Diogenes’, talking to Angela Rippon at his makeshift home above Plymouth rubbish tip. Diogenes became an integral part of the Lenkiewicz mythology, and was central to the now renowned Project, Vagrancy.
The Vagrancy exhibition marked the artist’s first large-scale themed ‘Project’, and launched his confrontational approach to public art. Lenkiewicz worked prolifically on a further twenty projects during his life in Plymouth. This DVD offers a unique opportunity to meet the man behind the work, and revisit the city that inspired him so much. As is often written: the story of Lenkiewicz is the story of Plymouth.
