Punch Magazine

At home we have a copy of the cover of Punch Magazine, dated 5 June 1963 "An aquatic scene with Mr Punch diving". It was given to my mother by Robert. It is interesting to note that in the painting "Self Portrait at 16 with Punch Magazine", this magazine appears to be on the chair. Was this added to the painting at a later date, or was Robert actually older than 16? Does anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a mystery! But surely it can only be one of those two above reasons?

That's fascinating, Chaya. It shows that there is still a lot of research to be done on Robert's work. I can see why the image would have amused Robert with the little frog with human feet; you can see copies of this vintage cover online on sites such as punchcartoons.com. You can even buy a print of that cover. Only close examination of the painting could tell us if this was added to the painting from 1963. Personally I think it's doubtful; in the summer of '63 Robert was 21 and the painting is still a masterful work for someone of that age.
